Legislators Hear from Harvard Prevention Research Center on How to Improve Health Options in Massachusetts Schools

As part of an ongoing and mutifaceted strategy, the Massachusetts Coalition on Obesity Prevention (MA COPE), organized by the Harvard Prevention Research Center on Nutrition and Physical Activity (PRC) at HSPH, hosted a legislative breakfast at the State House on April 4. Approximately 50 legislators and staff attended the sixth annual breakfast entitled "School Wellness in Action."

Massachusetts State Senator Thomas McGee

Massachusetts State Senator Thomas McGee spoke at the event.

PRC is directed by HSPH Professor Steven Gortmaker. Charles Deutsch and Jean Wiecha are deputy directors. All three work in the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health.

MA COPE is a collaboration between PRC, the Massachusetts Legislative Children's Caucus, and the Massachusetts Public Health Association. The event included a breakfast, comments from students from local schools, nutrition experts, and legislators, including Massachusetts State Senator Thomas McGee. Following the talks, a group of students accompanied Gortmaker on rounds, visiting legislators to drop off folders with data on obesity prevention and related information.
