"Andrew Spielman Memorial Symposium"

Institute Named for Lucian Leape Announced

The National Patient Safety Foundation in Washington, DC, announced on May 3 that it will establish a Lucian Leape Institute. Leape is an adjunct professor at HSPH and is a pioneer in the field of preventing medical error.

According to the Foundation, the Lucian Leape Institute will serve as a think tank and will define strategic paths and calls to action for the field of patient safety. The think tank will issue reports that will guide the work of the field and challenge the system to address the issues critical to making the system safer.


Sen Receives Kiel Prize

Amartya Sen, Lamont University Professor Emeritus at Harvard and adjunct professor of population and international health at HSPH, has been named one of three recipients of the World Economy Prize, also known as the Kiel Prize. The award is given by the Institute for the World Economy, the Schleswig-Holstein State Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and the German City of Kiel. The other two recipients are Helmut Schmidt, former German chancellor, and Ingvar Kamprad, founder of Ikea.

The award honors economists, politicians, and business leaders who enable society to live under free economic principles open to world markets.

A Noble Prize winner, Sen is renowned for his research into welfare economics and poverty.


Williams Named AAAS Fellow

David Williams, Florence Sprague Norman and Laura Smart Norman Professor of Public Health in the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health, has been named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Williams is a leading researcher in studying racial and ethnic health disparities.

Other 2007 fellows include former Vice President Albert Gore, Jr.; former Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor; New York Mayor and businessman Michael Bloomberg; Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt; New York Times investigative correspondent James Risen; and filmmaker Spike Lee.

Founded in 1780 by John Adams, James Bowdoin, John Hancock, and others, the Academy says it elects the finest minds and most influential leaders from each generation. The current membership includes more than 170 Nobel laureates and 50 Pulitzer Prize winners.


Lead a Summer Excursion

The Workplace Engagement and Enrichment Committee is seeking leaders of summer excursions. Leaders plan an activity to last for one hour during one day in the summer, such as lunches, walks, games, and sightseeing (see last year's NOW article for an example). Annual Bike Week

The annual Bike Week Commuter Challenge takes place from May 14 to 18. Register online, or contact Desiree Ruiz, Employee Transportation Advisor for HSPH. The deadline is May 16 by noon.

Bike Week is a friendly competition between businesses in Boston and Cambridge to see who can get the most employees and students to bike-to-work/school at least one day during National Bike Week.
