Student Awards Accepting Applications
UWE BRINKMANN MEMORIAL TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP

Applications are now being accepted for the annual Uwe Brinkmann Memorial Travel Fellowship, which is awarded each year to an outstanding doctoral student conducting field research in international health epidemiology at HSPH.
An investigator of tropical diseases and a dedicated teacher, Brinkmann held appointments in three HSPH departments. He was a founding member of the multidisciplinary New Diseases Working Group. He died in June 1993 while conducting field research in Brazil.
The Fellowship will provide an award of $2,500 to support travel to a field research site, and will be awarded to a doctoral student whose work exemplifies the interests and values of Brinkmann in seeking to bring together international health epidemiology and infectious diseases. Applicants must provide proof of having successfully passed or scheduled their Oral Qualifying Examination.
Applicants should submit the following materials:
- a three- to-five page proposal that explains the planned research project, how the travel funds would be used, and how the research would further the fields of international health, epidemiology, and infectious diseases;
- a letter of recommendation from an academic advisor.
The above materials for the Brinkmann Memorial Fellowship should be submitted to Barbara Heil, Department of Population and International Health, SPH I-1108, by Friday April 25, 2008.

Gareth Green Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice

The Gareth Green Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice is given to a student or student team for a practice project conducted while enrolled at HSPH. The project must contribute to the improvement of the health of a defined population and make a significant contribution to the work of the organization, agency, or community in which it is conducted. The award is presented at graduation.
The award is sponsored by the Division of Public Health Practice and the Office for Educational Programs, and is given in memory of Gareth M. Green, M.D. Green served as HSPH's Associate Dean for Professional Education from 1990-1998 and as the first chair of the Advisory Council of the Division of Public Health Practice.
Eligibility: Graduating students from any department and program who have engaged in a significant practice project during their time at HSPH are encouraged to apply for this award. Generally, projects that have been completed as part of a required practicum course (e.g. HPM 290, ID 261, ID 263, ID 264, ID 265, SHH 294) are the most appropriate for consideration. Also considered are practice projects completed in the summer as a degree requirement as well as practice projects completed in other courses or outside of the classroom (in conjunction with a course).
Process: Nominations may be made by faculty or students, and students may nominate themselves. The award includes a plaque presented at graduation as well as a $500 prize.

Dr. Fang Ching Sun Memorial Award

The Award Committee for the Dr. Fang Ching Sun Memorial Award is accepting nominations for this award to be presented at graduation.
The award is in memory of Dr. Fang Ching Sun, MPH '84, who had a brief but exemplary career improving the health and well-being of underserved populations in the rural mountains of his native Taiwan. The award — monetary and a plaque — will honor an outstanding student who is graduating in 2008 and has demonstrated a commitment to promoting the health of underprivileged people.
