Milestones at HSPH from Past Decade

  • HSPH Department of Biostatistics began offering PhD degree.
  • Office for Educational Programs established. Nancy Turnbull and Nancy Kane are appointed associate deans to head the program.
  • HSPH received $25 million from Gates Foundation to prevent spread of AIDS in Nigeria.
  • Master of Science Program in Health Care Management launched.
  • "The Future of Public Health: A Millennial Symposium" held.
  • The Harvard AIDS Institute, now the HSPH AIDS Initiative, opened HIV/AIDS lab in Gaborone, Botswana.
  • HSPH surveyed staff with the "Great Place to Work" survey. This effort was followed in 2006 with the "What's Your Harvard Like?" survey.
  • Core initiative in bioinformatics launched.
  • HSPH researchers developed healthy eating guidelines and an alternative to the US food pyramid.
  • Department of Society, Human Development, and Health created from a merger of the Departments of Maternal and Child Health and Health and Social Behavior.
  • Stephen Lagakos named chair of Department of Biostatistics. In 2006, he stepped down, and Louise Ryan became chair.
  • Harvard Law School and HSPH established joint degree program.
  • Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases created. Gökhan Hotamisligil named chair.
  • Genes and Environment Initiative launched.
  • State of the School Address Series began.
  • David Bloom named chair of Department of Population and International Health.
  • Government of Cyprus established environmental health initiative in association with HSPH.
  • Dean's Distinguished Lecture Series kicked off.
  • Douglas Dockery named chair of Department of Environmental Health.
  • HSPH received PEPFAR grant for HIV/AIDS efforts.
  • The School convened a three-part international symposia on Health Disparities & The Body Politic. Nancy Krieger was lead organizer.
  • Sue Goldie and Atul Gawande received MacArthur "Genius" grants.
  • Inaugural WinterSession.
  • Tulane Students made HSPH a temporary home after Hurricane Katrina.
  • School created recognition award program for staff.
  • China Initiative launched.
  • Meir Stampfer named chair of Department of Epidemiology. In 2007, he stepped down, and Hans-Olov Adami became chair.
  • Health Communication Concentration launched.
  • Jim Yong Kim named director of FXB Center for Health and Human Rights.
  • HSPH-affiliated Harvard Center on the Developing Child created.
  • Laurie Glimcher named head of Division of Biological Sciences. Michael Grusby became the new director of the PhD Program in Biological Sciences in Public Health.
  • Dyann Wirth announced as chair of Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases.
  • Public Health Foundation of India launched.
  • Office of Diversity established with Deborah Prothrow-Stith as first head.
  • Lisa Berkman named head of Population and Development Studies Center. Ichiro Kawachi named as her successor as chair of SHDH.
  • Howard Koh named head of Division of Public Health Practice.
