Incoming HSPH Dean Julio Frenk Receives Clinton Global Citizen Award
Dr. Julio Frenk, who will become Dean of Harvard School of Public Health in January 2009, has received a Clinton Global Citizen Award.
In naming Dr. Frenk, along with four other individuals, former President William J. Clinton said: "The Global Citizen Awards are about honoring and inspiring service to humanity. Our award recipients were chosen from a pool of remarkable candidates. Their innovation, dedication, and determination have changed lives, and their actions serve as models of what each of us can do to make a difference in the world."
Dr. Frenk is the former minister of health of Mexico and is currently a Senior Fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and President of the Carso Health Institute.
Blendon Receives Award for Public Opinion Research
HSPH Professor Robert Blendon has been named the recipient of the second Warren J. Mitofsky Award for Excellence in Public Opinion Research. The award recognizes Blendon’s pioneering use of public opinion data to better understand health care problems and craft more effective policy solutions, according to a press release from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research.
The award will be given at a dinner on November 13, 2008, at the Newseum in Washington, DC.
Mitofsky was chairman of the Roper Center Board of Directors. The Center established a fund in his name to support the Roper Center and to sponsor an annual award for outstanding work utilizing the Center’s archival holdings.
Blendon has worked for more than 20 years with colleagues in the United States and abroad to study how public opinion relates to policy. Blendon’s studies have been reported in more than 200 articles.
Glimcher Received Mentoring Award
HSPH Professor Laurie Glimcher received the 2008 Excellence in Mentoring Award from the American Association of Immunologists (AAI) at its 95th Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.
The Excellence in Mentoring Award was established by the AAI in 1997 to recognize the importance of the mentor-trainee relationship. A dedicated mentor can significantly influence a trainee’s successful development and career. With this award, AAI honors a member for his or her contributions to the profession through outstanding mentoring. The award is conferred annually during an awards ceremony at the AAI Annual Meeting.
