Student Award Nominations

Nominations are open for a number of annual student awards.

Brinkmann Travel Fellowship

The Uwe Brinkmann Memorial Travel Fellowship is given each year to a doctoral student who conducts field research in international health epidemiology. The fellowship provides $2,500 to support travel to a field research site and will be awarded to a doctoral student whose work exemplifies the interests and values of Brinkmann in bringing together the study of international health epidemiology and infectious diseases.

Interested HSPH doctoral students who have passed their oral qualifying examinations should submit application materials to Barbara Heil, Department of Population and International Health, SPH I-1104, by Friday, April 22. The applicants should explain in a letter the proposed research project, how the travel funds will be used, and how the research will further the fields of international health, epidemiology, and infectious diseases. Also included should be a letter of recommendation from an academic advisor.

Brinkmann held appointments in three HSPH departments. He was a founding member of the multidisciplinary New Diseases Working Group. He died in June 1993 while conducting field research in Brazil.

Gareth M. Green Award

The Division of Public Health Practice and the Office for Professional Education are accepting nominations for the Gareth M. Green Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice. The award includes a plaque and a $500 prize. Submission deadline is April 8.

The award is given in memory of Gareth M. Green, who served as associate dean for professional education from 1990 to 1998 and was the first chair of the advisory council of the Division of Public Health Practice at HSPH. Nominations are welcome from faculty, administrators of students, students, and/or student groups who meet the award’s criteria. The award recognizes a student or student team whose project in public health practice contributes to the improvement of health of a defined population and makes a significant contribution to the public health practice field.

All graduating students are eligible to apply.

Applications are available online at http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/commencement/ccgareth.htm.

Albert Schweitzer Award

The Albert Schweitzer Award is given annually to a graduating HSPH student whose past work and current activities have been marked by a "reverence for life" and who has sought, as expressed by Schweitzer, to "make my life my argument." The selection committee gives special emphasis to service activities undertaken by nominees during the course of their studies at HSPH.

Nominations should be in the form of a letter, describing in detail the relevant work and qualities of the nominee. Submit nominations to Heather Curtin in the Student Affairs Office, Kresge G-20, by Tuesday, April 12. The award will be presented at the HSPH Commencement Ceremony.

Nominees must submit the following statements: a brief summary of student/community service activities for the academic year 2004-05 and a 500-word essay that describes their public health vision and how their activities exemplified this vision.

Submit nominations to Heather Curtin in the Student Affairs Office, Kresge G-20, by Tuesday, April 12. The award will be presented at an upcoming student event.
