The award recognizes scholars early in their careers as health services researchers who show exceptional promise for future contributions. This award commemorates the dedication of Alice Hersh to supporting the next generation of health services researchers. Hersh was the founding executive director of the Association for Health Services Research, which merged with the Alpha Center in June 2000 to become AcademyHealth. A lawyer, Studdert researches the nexus between law and health policy. He is currently using records from the malpractice system to examine causes of medical errors that result in severe injury. He has also researched appeals by managed care enrollees against benefits denials by their health plans. "This is an extremely competitive award, and is a wonderful testament to the outstanding work that David has been doing," said Arnold Epstein, chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management.
