Deadlines Approach for Performance Assessments

Deadlines for employee performance assessments are approaching. Reviews for exempt staff are due on May 9 and for union staff on June 30.

"The performance management season is an opportunity for both parties to be proactive about addressing goals and concerns," said Sharon Whittaker, senior associate director of Human Resources at HSPH.

Information about how to conduct performance assessments and how to prepare for the performance discussion is available at http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/hr/. HSPH members may also speak to their human resources representatives.

BikeWeek Commuter Challenge

The BikeWeek Commuter Challenge 2003, "The Lord of the Roads: The Two Tires," is around the corner. The Challenge is a friendly corporate competition between businesses in Boston and Cambridge to see who can get the most employees and students registered to ride their bikes to work/school at least one day during National BikeWeek, May 11 to 17. Participants have the chance to win a new free bike and other prizes.

Awards will be presented to institutions with the greatest number of employees and students registered in the program in their size category and to institutions with the highest percentage of trips made by bicycle during National Bike Week.

HSPH has won the event in its size category three of the past four years.

The easiest way to sign up for the challenge is on CommuteWorks' website at http://www.masco.org/commuteworks.

There will be a "Bike Bash" at The Rack in Faneuil Hall on May 21 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., where the awards for the BikeWeek Commuter Challenge will be handed out. All registered participants in the Challenge are invited to attend the Bike Bash.

What’s All the Hub-Bub? Construction Taking Place in Building 1 Basement

image
Above, Matt Mazzola (l) and Dennis Curran (r) replace a pipe.
Anyone who has wandered into the basement of Building 1 recently has probably noticed a construction site. It would be hard to miss; the floor has been removed in sections. So what’s going on? Approximately 260 feet of pipe is being systematically replaced. At the same time, telecommunications conduits for telephones and other data transfer are being updated.

In-house tradesmen in Operations are doing all the work. Eight laborers have spent the last month digging out the pipes and surrounding dirt with shovels and buckets. The pipe work is expected to end on April 17.

Then, labs on that floor will be renovated.

Access to the mailroom on the same floor is not expected to be disrupted.
