HSPH Places in Top Five in Daffodil Days Fundraiser

HSPH sold 290 bouquets of daffodils to support the American Cancer Society during the annual Daffodil Days fundraiser. The school raised more than $2,000, placing fifth among Harvard schools and organizations. The remaining groups in the top five were: Harvard Law School, the University Development Office, Harvard College Observatory, and the Harvard Management Company. In total, Harvard members raised about $35,500, surpassing last year’s mark of $35,004. A total of 4,960 bouquets were sold university-wide.

Christine Kaye in the Student Affairs Office coordinated the HSPH effort with the help of more than a dozen department volunteers.

"Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day"

Human Resources is seeking volunteers for "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" on April 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event introduces young girls and boys to the many diverse careers that women and men hold at HSPH. Last year, 38 girls and 12 boys participated in the program.

To volunteer or to sign up a child to come to "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day," contact Desiree Ruiz at 617-432-0979. Children do not need to be the sons and daughters of their sponsors but must be at least eight years old.

Applications for Gareth M. Green Award Being Accepted

The Division of Public Health Practice and the Office for Professional Education are accepting nominations for the Gareth M. Green Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice for 2004. The award includes a plaque and a $500 prize. Submission deadline is April 19.

The award is given in memory of Gareth M. Green, who served as associate dean for professional education from 1990 to 1998 and was the first chair of the advisory council of the Division of Public Health Practice at HSPH. Nominations are welcome from faculty, administrators of students, students and/or student groups who meet the award’s criteria. The award recognizes the student or student team whose project in public health practice contributes to the improvement of health of a defined population and makes a significant contribution to the public health practice field.

All graduating students, regardless of degree program or department, are eligible to apply. Projects can be local, national, or international.Eligible projects must have been conducted for a course or directed study/tutorial during matriculation at HSPH and supervised by a faculty member.
