Dean Barry Bloom will continue to host installments of the Future of Public Health Millennial Symposium Series with two symposia in the next two weeks:

"Science to Practice: Salt as a Case Study"

Thursday, May 3, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Snyder Auditorium. Organized by the Department of Nutrition.

New York Times Health and Science Correspondent Jane Brody will moderate this discussion of the growing scientific consensus about the health effects of salt, as well as the knowledge of consumers and industry. The speakers will be Lawrence Appel, associate professor of medicine, Johns Hopkins University; Victor Fulgoni, president, Nutrition Impact, former Vice President of Nutrition, Kellogg Corporation; and Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy, Center for Science in the Public Interest.

"Genomics and Biostatistics in the 21st Century"

Wednesday, May 9, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Snyder Auditorium. Organized by the Department of Biostatistics.

New technological advances have produced unprecedented amounts of data that must be processed. The field of biostatistics is fundamentally changing as a result, with analysis needed of more and more variables in scientific studies. The panelists will discuss how these advances and, specifically those in genomics, will challenge today’s biostatisticians.

""We are now trying to sift through millions of variables to predict if something such as a vaccine will work," said Peter Gilbert, assistant professor in the Department of Biostatistics. "Interpreting this amount of data will be challenging and complicated."

The speakers will be David Botstein, chairman, Department of Genetics, Stanford University, and Terry Speed, Department of Statistics and Program in Biostatistics, University of CA, Berkeley.
