Dean Barry Bloom will continue to host installments of the Future of Public Health Millennial Symposium Series with two symposia in the next two weeks: "Science to Practice: Salt as a Case Study" Thursday, May 3, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Snyder Auditorium. Organized by the Department of Nutrition.
Wednesday, May 9, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Snyder Auditorium. Organized by the Department of Biostatistics. New technological advances have produced unprecedented amounts of data that must be processed. The field of biostatistics is fundamentally changing as a result, with analysis needed of more and more variables in scientific studies. The panelists will discuss how these advances and, specifically those in genomics, will challenge todays biostatisticians. ""We are now trying to sift through millions of variables to predict if something such as a vaccine will work," said Peter Gilbert, assistant professor in the Department of Biostatistics. "Interpreting this amount of data will be challenging and complicated." The speakers will be David Botstein, chairman, Department of Genetics, Stanford University, and Terry Speed, Department of Statistics and Program in Biostatistics, University of CA, Berkeley.
