Berkman is recognized nationally and internationally as a pioneer and leader in the field of social epidemiology. Her research on the effects of social networks on mortality risks helped define the field in the late 1970s. She helped broaden the field of study with her investigations of how social conditions related to inequality, race, ethnicity and social isolation influence health outcomes with aging. Last year, she co-authored the first textbook on social epidemiology, which has been widely regarded as a landmark work.
