HSPH Wins Energy Conservation Contest

HSPH won the "Go Cold Turkey" energy conservation competition among Harvard’s Longwood schools and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). The campaign at HSPH was organized by the Harvard Green Campus Initiative and Operations.

The "Go Cold Turkey" initiative asked participants to take an online pledge to conserve energy over the Thanksgiving holiday. The pledge period started at midnight on November 17 and ran through midnight November 27.

The pledge rates for the competitors were HSPH (24 percent); Harvard School of Dental Medicine (16 percent); Harvard Medical School (12 percent); and FAS (4.2 percent, excluding the College and Continuing Education).

Within HSPH, the Shattuck International House won a wine and cheese party for submitting the most pledges as a group.

If those who pledged continue to keep the promise for a year, the savings from turning off computers that are not in use will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions produced at Harvard, according to the Initiative.
