Flu Season Under Way, Free Vaccines Still Available at UHS for Harvard Community

image
Dean Barry Bloom received a flu shot at the HSPH clinic organized by Operations.
In mid-November, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that early evidence was pointing toward a more severe flu season than usual this year. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson encouraged Americans to get flu shots as early as possible. Since then, flu-related deaths and illnesses, particularly in Western states, have garnered media attention. The Colorado Department of Public Health has confirmed 6,306 flu cases, as of December 3. Included in that number are the deaths of several children.

HSPH held free flu vaccine clinics for its members on November 3 and 10, giving out approximately 800 doses, said Mary Jane Curran, director of Administration and Operations.

Upcoming free flu vaccine clinics for Harvard community members have been organized by Harvard University Health Services (UHS) in December and January at the Holyoke Center in Cambridge. A valid Harvard ID is required. The schedule is available at the web site located at http://huhs.harvard.edu/NewsFlash/InfluenzaVaccineSchedule.htm.
