January 2004 Marks Third Annual National Mentoring Month

image

January 15 is the nation's first ever "Thank Your Mentor Day," intended to encourage Americans to reach out and let their mentors know what a lasting difference he or she has made in their lives. The HSPH Center for Health Communication is leading this project, with the aim of recruiting volunteer mentors for today's children.

"Thank Your Mentor Day" is the centerpiece of the Third Annual National Mentoring Month volunteer recruitment campaign, which is spearheaded by HSPH and by MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership.

The campaign's theme is, "Who mentored you? Thank them...and pass it on! Mentor a child."

To find out more about how to participate in Thank Your Mentor Day, visit www.WhoMentoredYou.org. The web site features interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Colin Powell, Walter Cronkite, Gloria Estefan, Tom Brokaw, Martin Sheen, Ray Charles, Quincy Jones and others who discuss the importance of mentors in their own lives.

National Mentoring Month has been endorsed by President George Bush, both houses of Congress, numerous governors and mayors across the country, the nation's largest media companies and prominent nonprofit organizations.
