HSPH Dean Bloom Kicked Off New School-wide Speaker Series with Bioterrorism Discussion

image
HSPH Dean Barry Bloom was the first speaker in the new Faculty Research Speaker Series.
HSPH Dean Barry Bloom served as the first speaker of the new Faculty Research Speaker Series, organized specifically to inform members of the school community about research projects and interests at HSPH. The series resulted from feedback following the State of the School Address, delivered by Dean Bloom and HSPH Dean for Academic Affairs James Ware in October, and the Great Place to Work Survey of employees undertaken last spring.

Faculty, students, and staff listened to Dean Bloom as he discussed "Developing and Organizing Science and Technology to Counter Bioterrorism" on Tuesday, February 4 in Snyder Auditorium.

Dean Bloom provided an overview of the bioterrorism threat based on work he has done as co-chair of the biological panel and member of the Committee on Science and Technology for Countering Terrorism of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

The NAS/National Research Council report "Making the Nation Safer: The Role of Science and Technology in Countering Terrorism" is available at http://books.nap.edu/html/stct/index.html.

Dean Bloom reviewed key recommendations from the report, described information from other sources, and discussed issues and questions related to the university’s role in bioterrorism preparedness.

The next lecture in the Faculty Research Speaker Series will be announced in March.
