Doctoral Student Wins Award
John McCracken, a doctoral student in the Department of Environmental Health, was awarded the first Rebecca James Baker Memorial Prize at the annual conference of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) in South Africa. The award will be given each year to a student or new investigator and honors the memory of a young environmental epidemiologist and ISEE participant who died unexpectedly in 2004. McCracken's winning abstract was entitled "Improved Biomass Stove Intervention Reduces Blood Pressure among Rural Guatemalan Women."
National Patient Safety Conference
HMS and HSPH Assistant Professor Atul Gawande and HMS and HSPH Professor Troyen Brennan will speak at a national patient safety conference on February 6 and 7 at the Seaport Hotel in Boston. For details and registration information, visit www.rmf.harvard.edu/conference2006/ or call 617-679-1390.
Titled "Seize the Moment: Reaching Excellence in Patient Safety," the conference will also feature Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point and Blink, and HBS Professor Clayton Christensen, who has written about disruptive technology.
The conference will explore common problems, examining new perspectives on patient safety and the systems issues that impact patient care.
