GPTW Recognition Award Honorees Receive Gift Certificates and Letters of Appreciation in Surprise Visits

Equipped with festive balloons and good cheer, Dean Barry Bloom and members of the Great Place to Work (GPTW) committee surprised 47 HSPH employees with GPTW Recognition Awards on December 16. The recipients had been nominated by their colleagues for conducting work above and beyond the call of duty. Each winner received a letter of appreciation and a $100 gift certificate to GiftCertificates.com that can be used to purchase goods and services from hundreds of online or walk-in stores.

"I am very appreciative of the award," said recipient Barbara Heil in the Department of Population and International Health, who has worked at the School since 1981. "It has been a real pleasure to work in this department."

Added recipient Tyler Hendrie in Human Resources, "Being nominated to receive the Great Place to Work Recognition Award is a great feeling. I think it’s a positive reflection on the whole organization that HSPH employees are recognized for their efforts. Getting rewards like this is reward enough. HSPH is just that–a great place to work."

Said Mark Gehret of the Department of Epidemiology, "Receiving an award for participating in GPTW was truly shocking. I was surprised and honored when I was greeted at my desk with smiles, balloons, and a certificate of appreciation by members of the Great Place to Work committee. It proves to me that when you go out of your way to help make the workplace better, it is much appreciated. It makes me want to participate again all the more."

The GPTW Recognition Award program is ongoing. To nominate a colleague or to learn more information, visit the pin-enabled site at http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/gptw/. The awards resulted from a School-wide survey in 2002 that included a recommendation to enhance ways in which employees can be recognized for extra effort. Staff, faculty, and other academic appointees are eligible.

"It is a real joy to recognize these outstanding employees in this way," said Dean Bloom. "Their colleagues have noted their work efforts and have taken the time to nominate the recipients, which speaks volumes about the camaraderie and professionalism we enjoy at the School."
