HSPH Members Respond to Tsunami Disaster

Harvard Will Match Contributions

On December 26, a devastating series of waves resulting from a powerful earthquake in the Indian Ocean hit countries in South Asia and Africa. The death toll on January 7 was estimated at nearly 145,000 people.

Dean Bloom has written a letter to members of the HSPH community with advice on how they may help survivors, with a list of agencies involved in relief efforts. In addition, Jennifer Leaning, professor of international health at HSPH, and Michael VanRooyen, physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), both of the Program on Humanitarian Crises and Human Rights at the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at HSPH, have written a description of tsunami relief efforts involving members of the School and BWH. Activities include providing expert assistance to NGOs; continuing disaster training programs in Southeast Asia called HOPE (Hospital Preparedness for Emergencies); coordinating relief efforts with the Sri Lankan Association of New England; conducting outreach to media; and assisting in gathering Harvard University-wide interests in looking at relief and reconstruction issues in a presentation forum. To learn more about Dean Bloom's letter and relief efforts involving School members, visit http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/tsunamirelief/.

Harvard University will match donations up to $100 made by Harvard students, faculty, and employees through Community Gifts Through Harvard-Tsunami Disaster Relief to the charities listed below. Harvard students, faculty, and employees who have already made a donation to one of the organizations, and who would like to have it matched by Harvard, may fill out the form at www.community.harvard.edu/communitygifts/Tsunami_relief_form.pdf. Forms should be accompanied by a copy of the donation receipt or cancelled check and mailed to:

Community Gifts Through Harvard Attn: Tsunami Disaster Relief 124 Mt. Auburn Street, Suite 420 South Cambridge, MA 02138

Questions about matching contributions may be directed to the Office of Community Gifts Through Harvard www.community.harvard.edu/communitygifts/tsunami_relief.html or 617-495-4955.
