HSDM Construction Outside of Kresge Building

image
As part of an agreement with the City of Boston, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) is building a direct pathway that will lead pedestrians from Longwood Avenue to Huntington Avenue. Some of the construction is outside of the Kresge Building, where recessed stairways are being shortened to accommodate the new pathway. New lighting is being erected along the path, including a cluster of lights where Kresge and Building I meet that is meant to evoke an oasis and inspire reflection. New lighting has already been installed on the edifice of Countway Library. Construction is expected to last for about the next two to three weeks. Questions may be directed to the HMS Facilities Office at 617-432-1901.

Faculty Appointments

First appointed to the Department of Population and International Health in 2002 as professors of ethics and population health, biomedical ethicists Daniel Wikler and Norman Daniels now share the Mary B. Saltonstall chair. Each holds the title of Mary B. Saltonstall professor and professor of ethics and population health.

Wikler was the first staff ethicist for the World Health Organization and continues to consult for the agency. At HSPH, he co-directs the Program on Ethical Issues in International Health Research, which explores both empirical and theoretical research on ethical issues in health research, particularly in developing countries, and offers fellowships for scholars in developing countries.

Daniels, a former chair of Tufts University's Philosophy Department and professor of medical ethics at its medical school, has focused on health care sector reform and social justice. He is a member of the IOM and the author of ten books. He has created a rating system for reform efforts that has been used on a demonstration-project basis in more than a dozen countries, featuring benchmarks such as availability of cleaning up drinking water, road improvement, and health care provider autonomy, and his work on priority setting and limit setting has been influential in Europe and Canada.
