Donnelly has taken a leading role in working on the epidemiology of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. Her analyses of the BSE screening programs and of data on clustering of the bovine and human disease variant of this disease have directly advised policymakers in governmental and research agencies. Donnelly also played a key role in the analysis of the foot and mouth disease epidemic in Great Britain in 2001. --DF
