Democratic National Convention Update

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) will take place from Monday, July 26 to Thursday, July 29 at the FleetCenter.

A final listing of closures and news will be published in the next HPH NOW, July 23.

WHAT’s New or Updated

During the DNC week, Lovejoy Wharf will be closed, which will impact the MBTA inner harbor ferry routes F5 (Lovejoy Wharf, North Station to Moakley Courthouse and World Trade Center, South Boston) and F3 (Lovejoy Wharf, North Station to Charlestown Navy Yard). These inner harbor ferry routes will operate out of Long Wharf during the DNC.

From the South Shore, MBTA commuter boat services are available from Hingham to Boston and from Quincy and Hull to Boston and Logan Airport during the DNC.

Orange Line riders traveling inbound to Boston from Oak Grove Station will not stop at North Station. Instead, the trains will bypass North Station and stop at Haymarket Station.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has set up a DNC information line at 617-635-2004 and web site at www.cityofboston.gov/Info2004 to answer citizens’ questions regarding the convention.

HSPH NEWS

Deliveries of gas can be arranged for as early as 4 a.m. during the week of the convention. To do so, departments or labs should make arrangements with their gas suppliers and call HSPH Security (617-432-1040), who will escort the vendors. The early deliveries will help free the loading docks.

Operations will be mounting information and maps related to the DNC and traffic in the lobbies of the FXB and Kresge Buildings.

CHANGE TO MAIL ROOM HOURS

The convention traffic is expected to impact deliveries to and from HSPH. As a result, the Mail/Receiving Department will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the week of the DNC. The department strongly recommends that only essential items be ordered and delivered during that week.

OTHER ITEMS

MASCO has created a link on its web site at www.masco.org for DNC updates on transportation and security.

CommuteWorks has created an incentive program, including coordinating carpools, during the DNC. Visit http://www.masco.org/commuteworks/cwDnc.htm for more information.

The Convention’s web site features a link for information on traffic and on the MBTA (www.boston04.com).

To help identify the needs of HSPH commuters during the DNC, Operations is conducting a brief survey. If HSPH employees and students have not already done so, they are asked to visit http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/convention/survey/.
