Goldie Receives Gates Foundation Grant for Analyzing HPV Vaccine

Sue Goldie, associate professor of health decision science in the Department of Health Policy and Management, has received a four-year, $2.2 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to model and analyze the cost-effectiveness of a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. The grant is part of a collaborative effort of international partners funded by the Gates Foundation to research the development and evaluation of the HPV vaccine.

Cervical cancer remains the second most common cancer in women worldwide and the most frequent in developing countries.

High-risk types of HPV are the cause of cervical cancer.

PIH Library Closed, Volumes Sent to Countway Library and HIGH

The Population and International Health Library at HSPH closed on June 10, and Countway Library has agreed to assume responsibility for a portion of the collection. The 1,300 volumes selected for inclusion were based on a limited analysis of uniqueness and use. These have been boxed and shipped to the Harvard Depository from where they will be recalled over the next several months to be cataloged and processed in order to add them to Harvard's online catalog, HOLLIS, and the Countway collections. During this effort, the volumes will not be available immediately. Questions regarding the portion of the collection added to Countway holdings may be directed to Stephanie Walker at stephanie_walker2@hms.harvard.edu.

The majority of the library's holdings have been provided to the Harvard Institute for Global Health (HIGH) (www.globalhealth.harvard.edu/index.aspx). Users interested in accessing these materials should contact HIGH for information.

Changes to Taxi Escort Service

Effective June 13, the new hours of the Harvard Longwood Campus taxi escort service became 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. seven days a week.

Participants must have a valid ID for HSPH, HMS, or HDSM. Faculty, staff, and students may pick up vouchers at the FXB Security Desk. Security will be responsible for distributing vouchers and for coordinating the taxi pick-up.

* Taxi service is available at any time during these hours on a first-come, first-served basis.

* Taxi service is free within a one-mile radius of the campus. (See maps highlighting the radius at the Security desk.)

* Should the destination go beyond the one-mile radius of the campus, the taxi meter will be turned on, and participants are responsible for the additional fare.

* Each taxi will go to only one destination with up to four people. Multiple riders going to different destinations will require separate taxis and vouchers.
