Gary Bennett, an assistant professor in the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health, has been named one of 10 outstanding young leaders by the Boston Junior Chamber of Commerce (Boston Jaycees). Past recipients include U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1952) and activist Leonard Zakim (1984). Bennett studies racial and ethnic health disparities. Discovery Health Channel Inaugurates Honors Program, Recognizing Willett and Others The work of Walter Willett, chair of the Department of Nutrition, as well as the efforts of a dozen other scientists were celebrated as part of the inaugural Discovery Health Channel Medical Honors. Emceed by talk show host Regis Philbin, the event was taped in Washington, D.C. on June 23. The program will air on the Discovery Health Channel on July 8 at 8 p.m. (EST). Due to teaching obligations abroad, Willett was unable to attend, but he described his work during a video aired at the event. Susan Braun, president and CEO of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, accepted the award on his behalf. The Foundation was one of the nominating organizations for the honors. Junior High School Students Learn about Public Health Nearly 30 students from the Mission Hill School came to HSPH last month for "Youth Day," organized by the Office for Student Affairs and Operations. They learned about exercise, nutrition, environmental health, and violence prevention. Green to Receive Award for Raising HIV/AIDS Awareness Edward Green, senior research scientist at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies, will receive the Philly Bongole Lutaaya Award from the Ugandan North American Association in Seattle, Washington. The award is for raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and looking at prevention efforts from an African perspective. Green supports Ugandas so-called "ABC" model of AIDS prevention, which emphasizes abstinence, faithfulness between partners, and condom use. Philly Bongole Lutaaya spent time educating fellow Ugandans about HIV before he died of AIDS-related complications in 1989.
