Thier was president and chief executive officer of Partners HealthCare System from 1996 to 2002. He served as president of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) from 1994 to 1997. He has also been president of Brandeis University and the Institute of Medicine. Partners HealthCare was founded in 1994 by Brigham and Womens Hospital and MGH.
