Upcoming: Kids Risk Symposium

Whether it is poor nutrition, violence, or drug and alcohol use, children face a wide range of potential hazards to their well-being as they grow up. The upcoming symposium "Managing Children's Risks: It Takes a Commitment" tackles the issues of distinguishing big risks from small risks for children and discussing what can be done. The symposium takes place on March 26 and 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Harvard University Memorial/Annenberg Hall in Cambridge.

Intended for parents, child health professionals, educators, business leaders, policymakers, teachers, consumer, and journalists, the symposium will feature the release of the latest research from the Kids Risk Project, an effort to analyze and find cost-effective strategies to manage risks posed to children. The project is led by Kimberly Thompson, associate professor of risk analysis and decision science in the Departments of Health Policy and Management and Maternal and Child Health.

For more information and to register for the symposium, visit http://www.kidsrisk.harvard.edu/symposium.html

Students interested in attending should e-mail Karen Gondro (kgondro@hsph.harvard.edu) to ask about the student registration fee.

Faculty who would like to attend should contact Kimberly Thompson (kimt@hsph.harvard.edy) by e-mail to be registered.

The Kids Risk Project is also disseminating hard copies of The Annie E. Casey Foundation's Kids Count Data Book (see: http://www.aecf.org/kidscount/) to any member of the Harvard community interested in receiving a copy.  If you are interested in receiving a copy, please e-mail Karen Gondro (kgondro@hsph.harvard.edu) your complete contact information (with your interdepartmental mail address if you have one), or you can come by and pick up a copy after April 1st from the reception area on the 3rd floor of Kresge.

Special recognition will be given to the HSPH staff member who has worked at the school the longest. The identity of the employee will be revealed that day.

Sponsored by the School-wide Events Committee, the event will offer live music from the Deanna Paquet Jazz Quartet. (The band is named for its lead singer, who is also a staff member in Academic Affairs).
