Cape Cod Internship Available

The Ellen B. Jones/Cape Cod Public Health Practice Internship is accepting applications. Based at the Lower/Outer Cape Community Coalition, the two-month internship offers the opportunity to work with public and private sectors of Cape Cod to increase access to affordable, quality health care for every Cape resident. The team approach will help the intern focus on care coordination issues.

The internship includes researching practices and creating a team model to address the needs of older adults. The intern will also develop grant applications. Free housing in a private home will be provided, although the intern will be responsible for transportation to and around Cape Cod.

The intern’s primary work will be in the eight towns of the Lower/Outer Cape from Harwich to Provincetown. The intern will be supervised by the project director of the Cape and Island Lighthouse Health Access Alliance, a nationally funded collaborative effort.

The internship was established in honor of Ellen Jones, a community activist and former Harvard professor.

HSPH Career Fair

The HSPH Office of Human Resources is sponsoring its Spring Career Fair on Tuesday, April 9 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Kresge cafeteria. Department representatives and hiring managers will be available to speak about various career opportunities, such as administrative/office support, research, finance and management at HSPH. There will also be information on benefits and HSPH news. The event is open to the public as well as to internal candidates and students. For more information, call Human Resources at 617-432-1046.

Travel Fellowship Available

Applications are now being accepted for the annual Uwe Brinkmann Memorial Travel Fellowship, which is awarded each year to an outstanding doctoral student conducting field research in international health epidemiology at HSPH.

The fellowship will provide an award of $2,500 to support travel to a field research site and will be awarded to a doctoral student whose work exemplifies the interests and values of Professor Uwe Brinkmann in seeking to bring together international health epidemiology and infectious diseases. A tropical diseases investigator and teacher, Brinkmann held appointments in three HSPH departments. He was a founding member of the multidisciplinary New Diseases Working Group. He died in June 1993, while conducting field research in Brazil.

Applicants should submit a letter that explains the proposed research project, how the travel funds would be used, and how the research would further the fields of international health, epidemiology and infectious diseases.

Submit applications to Barbara Heil, Department of Population and International Health, SPHI-1104, by Friday, April 26.

Contributions to the fund may be sent to the Office of the Dean, HSPH, 677 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115.

Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Days

Take your daughters and sons to work for a day. Human Resources is planning on two days to allow HSPH parents to bring in their children to learn about where their moms and dads work.

"Take our Daughters to Work Day" will be on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for girls ages 7 years or older. Last year, more than 25 daughters, granddaughters, mentorees, neighbors and goddaughters were introduced to the diverse careers at HSPH.

The girls toured labs, heard presentations and did other activities.

This year, Human Resources is also offering a "Take our Sons to Work Day" on May 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for boys ages 7 years or older.

Human Resources is asking for ideas and volunteers for both days.
