More
than 30 high school students came to HSPH on March 8 to spend the day
learning about public health. They toured the school, spoke to scientists
and participated in activities.
The students are part of the SMILE Program, an after-school program for
students from underrepresented groups.
The day was sponsored by the Outreach Program in the Department
of Environmental Health, with funding from the NIEHS Kresge Center
for Environmental Health, the Harvard-NIOSH Education
and Research Center and the Superfund Basic Research Program.
Small groups of fifth- and sixth- graders from the Mission Hill and Farragut
Schools visited HSPH last week to learn about the basics of microscopy.
"Project Micro" allowed the students to see fingerprints, textiles,
powder, bugs and pond water up close.
The project was sponsored by the NIEHS Kresge Center for Environmental
Health, HSPH Environmental Health Education Program and HSPH Office for
Government and Community Programs. The project was a program of the New
England Society of Microscopy, which donated use of the microscopes.
