
Julie Gerberding
Gerberding is a nationally recognized public health leader and the first woman to lead the CDC. Prior to her 2002 appointment, Gerberding was Acting Principal Deputy Director of the CDC in 2002 and Acting Deputy Director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases from 2001 to 2002.
Since taking her post as CDC Director, Gerberding has grappled with SARS, monkeypox, health and disease prevention in natural disasters, and the looming threat of avian flu, as well as ongoing critical problems such as HIV, obesity, and health disparities.
