Ichiro Kawachi, HSPH Professor of Social Epidemiology, and David Studdert, HSPH Associate Professor of Law and Public Health, have agreed to serve as co-chairs of the School's Human Subjects Committee (HSC). They succeed long-time chair Troy Brennan, who left in February to become chief medical officer at Aetna.

The HSC is supported by the School's Human Subjects Administration, which manages the comprehensive program for protecting human research at HSPH, including education, outreach, policy, and monitoring. HSA has eight full-time employees. Sarah Putney directs the Human Subjects Administration.

Kawachi is a trained physician and expert in the study of health disparities. Studdert is a trained lawyer and has been integral in developing the Law and Public Health Group at HSPH. Both have contributed their efforts to the HSC in the past.

Said Dean Barry Bloom, "As you are all well aware, the protection of human subjects is among our highest responsibilities as researchers and forms the very basis of our privilege to conduct this type of research. I know that Ichiro and David, working with Sarah Putney and her staff and the entire HSC committee, will continue to have the fullest support and cooperation of the HSPH research community as they assume their new responsibilities."
