Kasisomayajula Viswanath
Kasisomayajula "Vish" Viswanath has been appointed associate professor of society, human development, and health in the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health. He will also help develop HSPH’s health communication curriculum.

Viswanath was the acting associate director of the Behavioral Research Program in the Division of Cancer Control and Population Science at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). As Associate Director, Viswanath oversaw the research efforts of 50 scientists, fellows and administrative staff on major NCI initiatives in cancer communications, research on tobacco and tobacco-related cancers, cancer screening, energy balance and cancer health disparities. While at NCI, he was also the program director for the institute’s largest health communications initiative–Centers for Excellence in Cancer Communication Research–and lead project officer for the Health Information National Trends Survey.

Prior to NCI, Viswanath was a faculty member at Ohio State University’s School of Journalism and Communication, with an adjunct appointment at the School of Public Health.

Gary Bennett
Gary Bennett has been appointed assistant professor of society, human development, and health in the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health, where he will examine how social and psychological determinants influence the development of racial and ethnic disparities in health status outcomes. Trained as a clinical psychologist at Duke University, he received a 2002-2003 Alonzo Yerby Postdoctoral Fellowship at HSPH. During his fellowship, Bennett studied whether the chronic stress of social disadvantage could help explain differences in biological processes between African Americans and other groups.
