Vote for Urban Design Posters

HSPH members will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite poster among more than 40 international entries on urban design that will be displayed in the FXB Atrium and lobby next week.

The posters were originally submitted for the Active Place Design Competition held in Vancouver from April 27 to May 1 at the annual meeting of the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA). The goal was to inspire professionals, such as architects and urban planners, to think about ways to incorporate opportunities for exercise into urban designs. For example, one entry proposed creating three swimming pools in WuHan City, China, that will use water directly from the neighboring Han River. Funding for the Vancouver competition came from EDRA and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, which is also sponsoring future displays of the posters in local Boston schools.

The idea for the competition stemmed from an HSPH and Harvard Design School conference in November 2003 titled "Promoting Physical Activity and Health by Urban Design." The conference was organized by Anne Lusk, visiting scientist, and Walter Willett, chair, both of the Department of Nutrition.

BikeWeek Competition to Begin

The annual BikeWeek Commuter Challenge will take place from May 16 to 20. The friendly competition is among institutions in Boston and Cambridge to see who can get the most employees and students registered to ride their bikes to work/school at least one day during BikeWeek. Participants have the chance to win a new free bike and other prizes. HSPH has won the challenge for its size category for four of the past five years.

To register, visit http://www.masco.org/commuteworks. A breakfast will take place on May 19 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at 375 Longwood Avenue for registered participants.
