Case will be helping students with a variety of tasks. He is currently trying to find affordable housing for dozens of applicants who will come to HSPH in the fall, no mean feat in the Boston housing market. He is developing programs, including one that will pair new students with peer mentors. The mentors will provide advice about the basics of living in an unfamiliar city and going to a new school. Another program will offer discussion meetings for students who are also parents. Case plans to focus on the needs of international students, and he was hired in part because of his experience in that area. Prior to coming to HSPH, Case worked at E.F. Education in Cambridge, MA, which places foreign teens and au pairs in American homes for one year. That experience, plus his own as a foreign exchange student in Spain a few years ago, gives Case a good perspective on what foreign students need. He plans to create a series of workshops on cross-cultural issues. "Just being a student here, theres a lot of pressure," said Case. "When you come from another country, there are other issues, such as cultural norms, that you need to learn to make a good transition." A graduate of the University of Vermont, Case has a bachelors degree in psychology and Spanish. Said Anne Occhipinti, director of student affairs, "Tyler is a great asset to our staff. His energy, cultural awareness and interest in the well-being of our students have all added to the great contributions that he is making here." His office is on the Ground Floor of the Kresge Building. His e-mail is tcase@hsph.harvard.edu.
