New Bike Racks Installed Outside of HSPH in Time for BikeWeek

When the Harvard Dental School of Medicine (HDSM) chose to demolish a small annex behind HSPH’s Building 2 in February, an HMS bike cage was also dismantled, leaving several dozen people in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area without a locked, sheltered enclosure in which to park their bikes.

The problem prompted HSPH bike commuters Debbie Mattina of Academic Affairs and Melitta King of the Office of Communications to form an ad hoc group that includes HSPH faculty, staff, and students. They are working with HSPH Operations to address several issues related to bicycling.

HSPH Operations has installed new, permanent bike racks outside of the emergency doors of the Kresge Atrium, while HMS has announced plans to construct a new bike cage in late May. The cage will be located at Countway Library, and will be sheltered and accessible by keycard swipe.

In addition, women’s showers will be installed at the school within a few months. Currently, women may use a unisex shower in Building 2. Men’s showers are available in some restrooms.

The ad hoc group is considering creating a web page linked to the Human Resources web page that would have information about commuting options and a brochure about bicycling resources for HSPH members. The group is also planning to work with Human Resources to explore possible perks for commuting to the school by bike. In addition, a speaker series about bike safety and other issues may be launched.

To be added to an email list for the HSPH bicycle ad hoc group, email dmattina@hsph.harvard.edu. The group plans to meet again in May.

The BikeWeek Commuter Challenge 2003, a friendly competition between businesses in Boston and Cambridge to see who can get the most employees and students registered to ride their bikes to work/school, will take place from May 11 to 17. More information is available at http://www.masco.org/commuteworks.

HSPH, HDSM and HMS are planning a BikeWeek Breakfast in the Countway Courtyard on Wednesday, May 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Staff, faculty, and students can register for BikeWeek and receive more information about the Challenge and about commuting to HSPH. If the weather is poor, the breakfast will take place in the Kresge Atrium.

CommuteWorks is also holding a BikeWeek breakfast on Friday, May 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at 375 Longwood Avenue.
