Update on Democratic National Convention and Expected Traffic Impacts

State and federal officials announced at a briefing on May 20 further security measures for the Democratic National Convention (DNC) that will impact traffic. The DNC is being held at the FleetCenter from Monday, July 26 to Thursday, July 29.

HSPH News

Operations will be mounting information and maps related to the DNC and traffic on easels in the lobbies of the FXB and Kresge Buildings.

Due to changes in normal routes, deliveries to and from HSPH may be affected during the DNC. The mailroom will operate on a schedule of 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. the week of the convention.

What’s New or Updated

I-93 will be shut down from Route 128 in Woburn to Route 128 in Braintree starting around 4 p.m. until midnight on the days of July 26 to 29. All local entrance ramps to I-93 north from Braintree to Boston will be closed, and all local entrance ramps to I-93 south from Woburn to Boston will be closed. Emergency vehicles and other designated vehicles will be allowed to use I-93 during this time.

With the closure of I-93, Storrow Drive (east of Western Ave.) and Leverett Circle will close. Sumner Tunnel and the Tobin Bridge (southbound) will also close in the evening.

North Station will close at the end of the day on July 23. Four commuter rail lines from the north will be stopped outside the city, and riders will be diverted to adjacent subway lines (Orange or Red Lines) or to MBTA buses to South Station or Haymarket.

MASCO is planning to provide private shuttle services from the MBTA stations at Porter Square and Lynn to the LMA during the DNC. Details to come. These shuttle services will be scheduled in tandem with revised MBTA schedules. Additional service on the Ruggles Express and JFK/UMASS shuttles is being planned during the DNC.

Parking will be suspended on Beacon Street between Charles and Arlington Streets and on Boylston Street from Massachusetts Avenue to Arlington Street.

A public awareness campaign called "Let's Work Around It" has been launched by officials. Traffic impact information can be found by visiting www.boston04.com or calling 617-374-1234.

HSPH Survey

To help identify the needs of HSPH commuters during the DNC, Operations is conducting a brief survey. If HSPH employees and students have not already done so, they are asked to visit http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/convention/survey/.
