HSPH Holds First ‘Take Our Sons to Work Day’

Joe Knowles and Sons
MPH candidate Joe Knowles (center) brought sons Tim, 10 (left), Jess, 8, and Cameron, 7 (right) to the event.
More than 20 boys participated in the first "Take Our Sons to Work Day" at HSPH on May 23, sponsored by Human Resources.

The boys shadowed their sponsors to learn about careers at the school. They toured the school and got to see how a physiology lab and a nutrition lab work. They learned about youth violence prevention, noise pollution, information technology and the use of skateboards in research. They ended the day with a tour of the Warren Anatomical Museum at Countway Library and with games on the quadrangle outside HMS.

Free Ice Cream Party for HSPH from BikeWeek Challenge Win

HSPH has won the BikeWeek Commuter Challenge in its size category for the third time in four years. The prize is a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream party on June 21 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. An ice cream truck will be parked outside the Kresge Building entrance, off Huntington Avenue.

The BikeWeek Commuter Challenge was a friendly competition between businesses in Boston and Cambridge to see who could get the most employees and students to bike to work/school at least one day during National Bike Week, May 11 to 19.

For information on safety when riding bikes, contact Melissa Marantz at 617-632-2796 or e-mail mmarantz@masco.harvard.edu.

Alumni Day Brings Graduates Back to HSPH

More than 100 HSPH graduates and their guests attended Alumni Day on May 17 at the school, organized by the Office of Alumni Programs. The theme of the day was "The Changing Face of Public Health: Responding to New Challenges After September 11th."

Alumni came from across the US and from several countries. Invited guests included the Consul General of Japan in Boston and the director of the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston.

Attendees were greeted by HSPH Dean Barry Bloom and Gail Price, president of the HSPH Alumni Council, SM ‘86. They then spent much of the day listening to lectures, participating in panel discussions, hearing faculty presentations and being updated on developments at the school.

HSPH students also met with alumni in a special forum moderated by Student Coordinating Committee President Sonia Mathews.

The day ended with the annual Alumni Awards of Merit dinner, featuring HSPH Professor Jennifer Leaning as a keynote speaker. Three alumni received Awards of Merit: DW Chen, MPH ‘89, Robert Hoover, ScD ‘76, and JoAnn Manson, MPH ‘84, DrPH ‘87.

Manson and Lee Win ‘Golden Shoe Awards’

JoAnn Manson, a professor, and I-Min Lee, an assistant professor, both in the Department of Epidemiology, received "Golden Shoe Awards" from WalkBoston in a ceremony on April 9 in Boston. The pair were honored for their research and writing in the areas of women’s health and preventive medicine, providing "a valuable message about the benefits of an active lifestyle."

Manson is a lead investigator of the Women’s Health Initiative of the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Lee is a researcher with the College Alumni Health Study, a prospective cohort study of the predictors of chronic diseases among more than 60,000 alumni from Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania.
