Blendon Named AAAS Fellow

HSPH Professor Robert Blendon of the Department of Health Policy and Management has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.

This year 376 members have been awarded this honor by AAAS because of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. New fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on Saturday, February 18, at the Fellows Forum during the 2006 AAAS Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Mo.

This year's fellows were announced in the AAAS News & Notes section of the journal Science on October 28.

Self-Defense Class for Women

The Harvard University Police Department is sponsoring a self-defense program for women in December. Known as the "Rape Aggression Defense Systems" course, or RAD, the program teaches strategies for avoiding dangerous situations and for dealing with forms of aggression.

The set of four sessions is free of charge and will take place on December 6, 8, 13, and 15, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Kresge 101. To sign up, email Sonia Toledo at stoledo@hsph.harvard.edu.

Tour 'Harvard in Allston' Exhibit

HSPH members are invited to tour the 'Harvard in Allston' exhibit room in the arcade of Holyoke Center. The exhibit was designed to invite and encourage members of the Harvard community to participate and contribute to the Allston planning process and to explore the work, ideas, and displays of the planning firm Cooper, Robertson and Partners.

The guided tour features an interactive model of Allston and several display boards depicting potential options and opportunities on matters such as transportation improvements, the distribution of open space, potential locations of various programmatic uses, and the creation of "special places" in Allston.

Tours for HSPH members are being offered on November 29, 3:30-5:00 p.m., and December 9, 9:00-10:30 a.m. They will last one to 1 1/2 hours. RSVP to Alison Reinhardt at 617-495-3525 or areinhar@camail.harvard.edu
