The former president of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Kenneth David Kaunda, will speak at a day-long event at HSPH on November 25 that highlights "Harvard Programs on AIDS in AfricaA University Responds." Also scheduled to speak at the event is Harvard Provost Steven Hyman. Kaunda is now the Balfour African President-in-Residence at Boston University. The Balfour Residency enables former heads of state of African democracies to work at BU for one year. Two sessions will take place in Snyder Auditorium from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. During Session I, researchers will provide an "Overview of Countries in Africa with Harvard Programs: Research, Training, and Public Health Activities." Countries will include Botswana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania. In Session II, three panels will discuss AIDS-related problems and opportunities for change in Africa. The topics are: "How to Accelerate Research on HIV Vaccine Development and Evaluation?"; "How do We Optimize Treatment, Prevention and Care?; and "What are the Economic, Policy and Human Rights Implications?" Facilitators of the event include: Harvard AIDS Institute, HMS Division of AIDS, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at HMS, the Departments of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Nutrition, Population and International Health, the Division of Public Health Practice, and the François Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at HSPH, the Committee on African Studies, the Division of Infectious Diseases at Childrens Hospital, and Partners AIDS Research Center. A poster session will take place from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the FXB Atrium. The days agenda is subject to change.
