Harvard President Lawrence Summers, HSPH Dean Barry Bloom and Harvard AIDS Institute (HAI) Chair Max Essex will speak at the forum "Public Health Crisis in Africa: How May Harvard Help?" on October 28 from 3:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Snyder Auditorium. Co-sponsoring the event are the student group Africa Health Forum and HAI. Additional seating will be available in Kresge G-2 and G-3.

Also speaking will be Emmanuel Akyeampong, chair of the Harvard University Committee on African Studies and professor of history, Department of History, and Pride Chigwedere, president of Africa Health Forum and doctoral student in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases. The moderator will be Deborah Prothrow-Stith, professor of public health practice, Department of Health Policy and Management.

Africa has some of the worst health outcomes of any region world wide, note the event's organizers. Infectious diseases, malnutrition, political conflicts and natural disasters undermine an already weakened socio-economic structure.

Harvard has a wide range of projects in the region.

LIVE WEBCAST begins at 3:45 pm on October 28, 2003.
