HSPH volunteers sort through mounds of donated clothing.
On October 8, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake rocked Pakistan, India, and the Kashmir region, killing tens of thousands and displacing millions more. (See this message from Dean Bloom) The disaster occurred just weeks after Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast. HSPH researchers and alumni have been involved in response efforts, and School staff and students have organized clothing drives. Amina Khan and Monisha Machado worked with fellow HSPH students and other student groups in the LMA to collect donations, blankets, and clothes for victims of the earthquake. In less than a week, the students collectively gathered about 50 boxes of goods, which were flown free of charge to Islamabad, Pakistan.

In addition, over several weeks, a group of HSPH volunteers gathered more than 150 boxes of clothing, toys, housewares, and children's books to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Hurricane Clothing Drive team is distributing them as follows: the majority (men's, women's and children's warm-climate clothing, toys, housewares, and children's books) to a United Way-designated distribution center in Houston, TX for the Katrina survivors; in addition, baby equipment and toys to the Family Van Program, a human services program located in Mission Hill; winter clothing to earthquake survivors in Asia (c/o the HSPH earthquake winter clothing drive); and 40 children's books to the Horizons Housing shelter in Boston, for families displaced by domestic violence. Goods ineligible for the drive's purposes or these destinations were donated to the local Salvation Army and the Morgan Memorial Goodwill centers.
