Howard Koh
Koh Appointed to Board of Health Philanthropy and to Chair of Massachusetts Medical Society Committee

Howard Koh, associate dean for public health practice, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) Foundation’s board of directors. Since its inception in 2001, the Foundation has awarded 247 grants, totaling $8.3 million, to different organizations and has instituted policy initiatives to expand access to health care for uninsured and low-income individuals and families in Massachusetts. The Foundation is governed by its own 17-member Board of Directors and operates separately from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. The Foundation is one of the largest health philanthropies in the state.

Koh has also been named the new chairman of the Committee on Public Health for the Massachusetts Medical Society. The society is the oldest continuously operating medical society in the United States.

Leape Receives Patient Safety Award

Lucian Leape, adjunct professor of health policy in the Department of Health Policy and Management, has received a John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award for improving understanding of the nature of medical errors and the extent of the patient safety problem in the U.S., as well as for his efforts to improve the safety of care for patients. The award is given by the National Quality Forum (NQF) and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The presentation ceremony will be on Wednesday, October 6 at the NQF’s Fifth Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Security Report from Harvard University Police Department Available Online

Harvard’s annual security report, prepared in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the Clery Act), is entitled Playing It Safe and can be found on the Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) web site at http://www.hupd.harvard.edu/prevention_handbook.php. Playing It Safe includes information about the HUPD, how to report a crime, crime prevention programs, substance abuse, sensitive crimes, and other information about security and HUPD services on campus.

The report also contains three years of statistics on reported campus or campus-related crimes.

Universitywide Ethics Center Accepting Applications for Fellowships

The Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics at Harvard University is accepting applications for the 2005-2006 Faculty Fellowship program. The deadline is Thursday, December 2.

The Center encourages teaching and research about ethical issues in the professions and public life. The fellowships support teachers and scholars who wish to develop their ability to address questions of moral choice in areas such as business, education, government, law, medicine, and public policy.

Applicants should hold a doctorate in philosophy, political theory, theology or related disciplines; or a professional degree in business, education, public policy, law, or medicine.

Preference will be given to applicants at an early stage of their careers, usually no more than ten years from the terminal degree in their field. Fellows are selected by a University committee of Harvard faculty members.

Register for Annual Radiation Sciences Symposium

Registration is now open for the John B. Little Center for Radiation Sciences and Environmental Health’s Seventh Annual Symposium, "Genetic Stability through Quality Control in Cellular Processes," to be held on November 5, 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on November 6, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in Snyder Auditorium. More than 400 scientists attended last year.

‘Outings and Innings’ Resumes Visits to LMA

After suspending service at the Longwood Medical Area due to limited staffing earlier this summer, ‘Outings and Innings’ has resumed visits to HSPH. The employee service offers savings on movies, sporting events, and other tickets. Representatives will be in the Kresge cafeteria on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.
