Doctors and nurses are available at Vanderbilt Hall, 275 Longwood Ave., (617-432-1370; M and Th, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Tu, W, and F, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Holyoke Center, Harvard Square, 3rd Floor (617-495-8414; M-F, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.). For after-hours, urgent care, go to Holyoke Center, Harvard Square, 5th Floor on nights, weekends, and holidays (617-495-5711). In life-threatening situations, call 911 (or 9-911 from a campus phone).

8. Experiencing personal difficulty? Concerned about a friend? Call the Mental Health Service (617-495-2042; M, F, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; T, W, and Th, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) or 617-495-5711 at night and on weekends and holidays.

9. When winter hits hard, find out if the School is closed by calling 617-432-NEWS.

10. Get to the Cambridge campus for free. Use your Harvard ID on MASCO shuttles at Vanderbilt Hall, 107 Avenue Louis Pasteur. Visit http://www.masco.org/transit/ptsM2.htm for the schedule.

Register your bike and laptop with the Harvard University Police Department to help protect against theft. For more information, visit http://www.hupd.harvard.edu.

12. Fire drills take place at the School numerous times each year. The procedure consists of one set of alarms, accompanied by blinking lights, that goes off throughout the building. An automated voice announces there is an emergency. Listen for a second set of alarms-different from the first-that alerts people to leave specific floors that need evacuation. If you don't hear the second announcement, you don't need to leave, unless you feel uncomfortable staying.

13. The Harvard Longwood Campus has a walking escort service available 24 hours a day. A security officer will escort faculty, staff, or students on request to any of the LMA parking lots, buildings, or local T stops. To use this service, call 617-432-1379.

14. For safety reasons, a late-night taxi service is available from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. all week. The service is free within a one-mile radius of the campus. You are responsible for fare past the one-mile radius. Users must have a valid ID from HSPH, HMS, or HDSM. At HSPH, vouchers may be picked up at the FXB Security Desk.
