Starting an academic year, especially for new students, comes with lots of excitement-and, most likely, lots of questions. Here are some offices that are good to know.

The Office for Student Affairs plays a key role in the lives of HSPH students, from the time they first arrive at Orientation, through their studies at the School, all the way up to the graduation march at Commencement. The office:

• Advises existing student groups and helps explain policies for establishing new ones.

• Serves as a resource for information about the School, Harvard University, and Boston.

• Oversees applying for housing, assigns lockers, and administers a discount pass program for students to use the MBTA.

• Offers guidance for students on resources that can help them handle their courseloads and ensure their well-being.

• Assists students with disabilities.

Getting into graduate school is hard work, and figuring out the best way to finance the education can be challenging, too. The Office of Student Financial Services works with departments to coordinate financial support while providing students with information on finding sources of support.

Student Financial Services provides guidance on:

• Federal student loan programs

• Debt management, including how to consolidate student loans

• Stipends and scholarships

• Billing issues.

For Orientation, the staff will maintain a satellite office on the Ground Floor of the Kresge Building until September 9.

"Creating a workable strategy for financing an advanced degree is an important aspect of student life," said Kathryn Austin, director of Student Financial Services.

At the core of a graduate school education is the coursework undertaken. The Registrar's Office:

• Enrolls students

• Guides students as they register for classes on the Oasis online registration system

• Maintains student data and grades

• Helps ensure students are fulfilling requirements to receive their degrees, including scheduling oral examinations and dissertation defenses

• Bills students' tuition and schedules courses

• Serves as liaison for doctoral students

• Advises on cross-registration.

"We know that pursuing an advanced degree takes a lot of work and that there can be bumps along the way," said Joann Wilson-Singleton, Registrar. "We are here to get students on the right pathway for their degrees and then help them stay on track throughout their time here."
