Volunteer to Be a Big Sister

The Big Sister Association of Greater Boston is looking for volunteers to work with local girls in a school-based mentoring program. Volunteers will be matched with a girl in the 4th or 5th grade at the Tobin School or the Farragut School on Mission Hill (a five to 10-minute walk from HSPH) and meet during the school day, for 45 minutes to an hour, once a week, for the duration of the school year. Time together may be spent eating lunch, playing games, reading, or sitting and talking. Last year, seven of the 30 volunteers were HSPH students and employees.

For more information and to get an application, call the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston at 617-236-8060.

Electronic Library Sources Available

Harvard University is increasing its use of websites as tools for accessing university data and resources. As a result, login names and passwords and/or PINs (personal identification numbers) are required to use some of these sites.

Two library sites now use a login system when accessing resources from outside the library. These are HOLLIS Electronic Resources and the Countway’s Digital Library. Each site uses its own login process and PIN.

To obtain the HOLLIS PIN, go to www.pin.harvard.edu and follow the instructions for requesting a new Harvard University PIN. For more information or assistance with accessing HOLLIS Electronic Resources, please contact the UIS Help Desk at 617-496-9001 or pin_help@harvard.edu.

The Countway’s Digital Library, a collection of electronic information resources available to Harvard ID holders at their computer desktops, contains approximately 1,400 full-text journals, 65 full-text textbooks, various databases of interest to the health care and scientific community such as Medline and Science Citation Index, and web site links.

Register to use the Digital Library at www.hsph.harvard.edu. Registrants will need an HSPH e-mail account. Click on the Countway Library link, then on "New User Register Here" button and submit the registration form. A user ID and password specifically for the Digital Library will then be sent to the registrant.

Student Barbecue Draws Crowd in Courtyard

At right, dozens of students enjoyed a barbecue on September 12 in the Countway Courtyard sponsored by the Office for Students. The event was an opportunity for many new HSPH members to get to know each other, as well as to meet returning students.
