Students Organize Support for Relief Efforts

HSPH students Rasha Maal-Bared, Allie Friedman and Stephanie ShihHSPH students have reacted quickly to the September 11 attacks, organizing several initiatives to support relief and charity efforts.

HSPH students John Madril, William Tan, Mike Wood and Jessica Seabury, with fellow classmates, have set up a table outside of the Kresge cafeteria to collect donations for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Checks payable to the relief fund can be donated at the table and receipts are available. The students have already raised $4,200. Bottled water, peanut butter and jelly jars, canned meats, and new clothing for rescue workers are also being collected. The goods will be given to the Salvation Army and stored until they are needed by the relief workers in the coming months.

HSPH student Stephanie Shih is selling handmade, red, white, and blue ribbons for $2 each at a table outside of the Kresge cafeteria. The proceeds go to the "September 11th Fund" of the United Way of New York City. So far, she has raised $750.

The combined goal of both initiatives is between $8,000 and $10,000.

Many HSPH students have joined the efforts, but Shih said more volunteers are needed to help man the tables.

The students are also organizing a blood drive at HSPH.

Shih has created a new student organization in direct response to the attacks. The mission of Students for Socially Responsible Enterprises is to encourage student involvement and commitment to socially responsible initiatives and provide services to non-profit organizations.

A fundraising table for the Red Cross will also be set up in the Countway Courtyard on Friday, September 21 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. as part of the Biomedical Research Equipment and Supplies Exhibit 2001.
