A web site initiative called "MyHSPH" has given students, faculty, and staff an unprecedented ability to customize information about HSPH and to share messages with the School community. For more detailed information on how to communicate with students, see the article below.

MyHSPH can be accessed directly at http://my.hsph.harvard.edu or at the School's home page (http://www.hsph.harvard.edu). After users login with their Harvard ID numbers and PINs, they will be presented with a web portal for either a student, a faculty member, or a staff member based on their position at the School.

All views share a number of features:

• A section of announcements targeted at the user's group. For example, students may find messages about class registration, while staff may find reminders about benefits deadlines.

• A section featuring HSPH-wide announcements, such as the School's involvement in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

• Novell NetStorage, which is a way for users to save files onto their P drives and then access those files anywhere they have an Internet connection, such as from home

• A link to outside news feeds, such as NPR News and Boston.com, as well as to HSPH press releases and Harvard Public Health NOW

• Discussion forums

• Webmail access

• A link to the School's home page

• Access to the HSPH online calendar

The best part is that users can customize a number of features on their sites by adding, removing, or changing the order of items. For example, a user may decide to add the schedule for the Ruggles shuttle to their web view or add a news feed, such as the New York Times, to their News and Events section.

"The HSPH Web Committee, IT Advisory Committee, Office for Student Services, and the Information Technology Office have been working on these portals this past year to make information more accessible and tailored to individuals at the School," said Deane Eastwood, manager for instructional computing and application development at the School. "We want MyHSPH to be the new, one-stop shopping site for community information and web applications. We encourage everyone to make suggestions on what would make MyHSPH more useful to them."

Training on how to use MyHSPH will be offered on the following days in October.

Tuesday, October 4, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Microlab LL-19

Manage E-Mail Lists with Listserv Tool

All HSPH community members may set up and manage their own e-mail lists. A new tool called "Mailman" provides the ability for the list owner to control list membership, distribution options, and content control. Community members may use these lists for any groups in need of group e-mail communications. The form requesting to establish a group can be found at http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/mailman-list. There are help pages at this link, as well as statements regarding appropriate use of Harvard IT systems.

New Ways to Communicate with Students

The Office for Student Services and HSPH students have worked closely with the Information Technology Office to develop easier and more efficient ways for School members to communicate with and among students. The methods were unveiled to coincide with the start of the academic year.

"We continually seek to improve and expand the School's offerings to our students," said Stan Hudson, Associate Dean for Student Services. "We have collaborated with students to develop these new and refined ways of communication, which are designed to enhance the educational and social environment at the School."

All students have access to the new HSPH Student Portal, "my.hsph.harvard.edu." (See article above). This personalized site carries School-wide and student-specific announcements, access to course software, connections to the School calendar, and other useful tools.

The Student Portal will be the primary vehicle for making announcements and sending reminders to students and will reduce the number of individual e-mails that are sent to students as a group.

Messages may also be sent via a group e-mail called "Student News," formerly called the "Student Digest."

To post messages to the Student Portal and/or Student Digest, complete the form at https://webapps.sph.harvard.edu/internal/myhsph/addannouncement.cfm. The requests will be moderated by the Office for Student Services.

In cases of emergencies, messages may be approved and then posted by:

Mary Jane Curran, Operations, maryjane_curran@harvard.edu
Jim Glover, Office for Student Affairs, jglover@hsph.harvard.edu
Robin Herman, Communications, rherman@hsph.harvard.edu
Stan Hudson, Office for Student Services, shudson@hsph.harvard.edu
Audrey Smith, Office of the Dean, asmith@hsph.harvard.edu

HSPH students may now create their own individual web pages using "people.hsph.harvard.edu" in the URL. Information on how to get started and on policies to keep in mind is available at http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/it/studentwebpages.html.

Training for students will be offered on the following days in October.
