Getting to Know HSPH: Tips for New Students

1. Visit the Office for Students, Kresge G-10, for information about student services, including how to get special, four-month T student passes and how to sign-up for the student locker lottery. Orientation schedule is online at www.hsph.harvard.edu/Admins/offstuds/.

2. There are numerous student organizations at HSPH. Check your student handbooks for more information.

3. Check the school’s web site at www.hsph.harvard.edu for the latest news about HSPH research and other items. Check Calendar at www.hsph.harvard.edu/calendar to see what events are going on at the school.

4. This year, for the first time, a month-long period of time called WinterSession devoted to special classes will take place from January 2 to 28, 2003. WinterSession replaces the briefer "e" period. Visit www.hsph.harvard.edu/registrar/WinterSession/index.shtml for more information. Also, fall semester courses ("ab" and "b") will now end before the holiday break so that students will not need to take exams in January.

5. Kresge G-1 is Snyder Auditorium.

6. Sebastian’s Café is on the first floor of the Kresge Building. Hours are Monday to Thursdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Fridays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cafeteria stops serving main dishes at 2 p.m. and closes briefly from 11:20 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

7. The student lounge is in the FXB Building Atrium above the Security Desk. To get there, take the steps next to the elevators in FXB to the second floor.

8. If you’re not feeling well, visit University Health Services (UHS). Doctors and nurses are available at Vanderbilt Hall, 107 Avenue Louis Pasteur, (617-432-1370, Mondays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Holyoke Center, Harvard Square, 3rd Floor (617-495-8414, Mondays to Fridays, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.). For after-hours, urgent care, go to Holyoke Center, Harvard Square, 5th Floor on nights, weekends, holidays (617-495-5711).

9. If you need peer support for mental health issues, call In Common at 617-382-TALK, 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays. If you have an urgent emotional problem or are concerned about a friend, call the Mental Health Service at 617-495-2042 during business hours or 617-495-5711 at night and on weekends.

10. To find out if the school is closed in bad weather or due to other circumstances, call 617-432-NEWS.

11. Get to the Cambridge campus for free. MASCO buses shuttle students between Harvard Square and Vanderbilt Hall, 107 Avenue Louis Pasteur, Monday through Saturday. Just show your ID card to board. Due to construction at the Tugo Circle near Vanderbilt Hall, there have been some changes to pick-up and drop-off locations. Visit www.masco.org/transit/ptsWelcome.htm for more information.

12. The Longwood Area police are stationed at 180 Longwood Avenue. Officers are available to give assistance 24 hours a day. The emergency number is 617-432-1212. Free walking and taxi escort services are available. Visit www.hupd.harvard.edu for more information.

13. Protect your bicycle from theft by registering it with the Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) at www.hupd.harvard.edu. (Bike racks are outside, between Building 1 and the Warren Alpert Building at HMS. There are also bike racks protected under a roof behind Building II. To have access to the sheltered bike rack area, ask Security in the FXB Building). To register your laptop, take the computer to the Longwood Area police at 180 Longwood Avenue.

14. Ask for a frequent coffee buyer card when you pay the cashiers at Sebastian’s Café. Buy nine cups and the 10th is free.

15. HSPH students have full access and borrowing privileges to the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, next door to HSPH. A valid Harvard ID is required. Massachusetts residents can also get a free card for the Boston Public Library by visiting one of the branches and filling out an application. Bring identification that shows you are currently living in Massachusetts. The closest branch to HSPH is the Parker Hill Branch, 1497 Tremont Street. The Central Branch is at the Copley Square T stop.

16. Need stamps? There is a postage machine next to the vending machines near Sebastian’s Café. Need more than stamps? The post office is at 1575 Tremont Street.

17. Use your ID card as "Crimson Cash" and debit food, laundry, and copy machine costs from your account. Visit www.cash.harvard.edu to sign up.

18. This is the fire drill procedure: one set of alarms, accompanied by blinking lights, goes off throughout the building. An automated voice announces there is an emergency. Listen for a second set of alarms–different from the first–that alerts people to leave specific floors that need evacuation. If you don’t hear the second announcement, you don’t need to leave, unless you feel uncomfortable staying.

19. Keep an eye on bulletin boards around the school for information on apartment rentals, roommate seekers, car sales, and furniture sales.

20. Get free, filtered water by the vending machines near the entrance to Sebastian’s Café. A microwave is also there.
