- Respiratory infections are an enormous public health burden. To combat infections, neutrophils travel from the pulmonary capillaries into the alveolar air spaces, where they phagocytize and kill bacteria. Proper regulation is essential; too many neutrophils or excessive neutrophil activation promotes inflammatory lung disease, whereas too few neutrophils or inadequate activation of neutrophils promotes infectious lung disease. The processes of neutrophil emigration and activation are regulated by the expression of multiple genes, including cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules. Major focuses of our current work are the roles played by NF-kappaB and STAT3 transcription factors in dictating the expression of innate immunity genes in the lungs, in directing neutrophil emigration and activation, and in balancing the protective and destructive effects of pulmonary inflammatory responses.

- Pneumonia Biology -- Additional information about our research and opportunities for training or other interactions.
- Biological Sciences in Public Health (Ph.D. Program) -- The Ph.D. Program in Biological Sciences in Public Health trains students in basic biological sciences, epidemiology, and biostatistics.
- Physiology Program -- The Physiology Program at HSPH centers on the respiratory system, a route of entry and a site of damage for toxins and infections. The program brings together investigators studying the mechanisms of normal lung function and of pathologic alterations due to genetic variation and/or environmental exposure.
- Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center -- The NSEC encourages and promotes training in the emerging fields of nanosciences, through an integration of research, education, and public outreach.
