David Blumenthal, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Professor of Health Care Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital/Partners Health System and Harvard Medical School. He also serves as Chief Health Information and Innovation Officer at Partners Health System in Boston, Ma. From 2009 to 2011, Dr. Blumenthal was the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology under President Barack Obama. In this role, he was charged with building an interoperable, private and secure nationwide health information system and supporting the widespread, meaningful use of health IT. He is the author of the book Heart of Power: Health and Politics in the Oval Office, which tells the history of US Presidents’ involvement in health reform, from FDR through George W. Bush. A member of the Institute of Medicine and a former board member and national correspondent for the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Blumenthal has held several leadership positions in medicine, government, and academia including Senior Vice President at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
