Considered part of the Spring Semester, WinterSession is a special term at the Harvard School of Public Health which runs from January 2 through January 25, 2013. For students and faculty, WinterSession provides a break from the academic routine of the fall and spring semesters, and offers opportunities for creativity and innovation in learning and teaching.

This site presents all the information needed to guide you through the processes of WinterSession. If you have additional questions, please contact the Registrar’s Office directly at 617-432-1032 or registrar@hsph.harvard.edu.

Participation

In general all full-time students are expected to participate in WinterSession activities, whether for-credit or non-credit, on-campus or off-campus, in accordance with their individual needs and interests. Each department will have the authority to require participation or to grant exemptions based on its own internal guidelines. WinterSession is optional for part-time students.

Students may take up to five credits during WinterSession. An independent study course may be taken for 2.5 credits.

Acceptable activities might include tutorials/independent study projects (with faculty members who are willing to take these on), travel tutorials, field placements, practica, community service projects, courses organized and taught by students, and skill-building workshops sponsored by administrative departments of the school. Again, approved activities need not be located on campus, or even in the United States.

Costs

WinterSession is considered part of the spring semester, and thus will not raise tuition for full-time students. Part-time students will be required to pay for credits taken during WinterSession as they do at other times of the year. Travel expenses and materials fees are not considered part of tuition and will be borne by the student. However, modest funds are available to support expenses for travel-related HSPH courses during WinterSession. Please consult the Travel Grants section of the Student Handbook for information regarding funding for travel-related HSPH WinterSession courses.

Registration

Student registration for WinterSession credit courses through ALICE will begin on Thursday, December 6, 2012. The WinterSession registration deadline is Tuesday, January 1, 2013. The drop/change deadline for a WinterSession course is the day of the second class meeting.

Those students wishing to participate in non-credit activities should contact the activity leader directly either by e-mail or phone. Students cannot register for non-credit activities through ALICE nor through the Registar’s Office.
