Career Incubator Fund

Applications are CLOSED for the 2015 Career Incubator Fund (CIF). The next award cycle will be announced in the Fall of 2016.

The Harvard Chan School Career Incubator Fund (CIF) is designed to encourage and support the scientific career development of Chan School Assistant and Associate Professors on the tenure ladder. To advance this goal, we solicit proposals for (a) Pilot Projects, or (b) Data Collection/Analysis Projects that will provide faculty the opportunity to develop their research ideas, collect pilot data, or conduct secondary data analysis to be used as pilot data. Although not required, we are particularly interested in proposals that are interdisciplinary in nature. The program is intended to maximize faculty competitiveness for extramural funding by allowing faculty to develop innovative and novel ideas/methods.

Deadline (Extended): Monday December 14, 2015 at 5:00pm

Submission requirements: An electronic (PDF) copy of application in ONE document (materials to include in your application are listed below)
Submit to: Office of Research Strategy and Development (ORSD),
Contact regarding questions: Leigh Melanson at or 617-432-1774

Primary Chan School Assistant and Associate Professors who are within 3-8 years of initial appointment are eligible to apply. Competitive renewal applications will not be accepted from previous Career Incubator Fund awardees.
Please note: Faculty no longer have to provide evidence that their start-up packages have been depleted and faculty who have start-up funds remaining will NOT be less competitive for this award.

Applicants can apply for one of two mechanisms: (a) one-year Pilot Projects (up to $50,000 total); and (b) smaller Data Analysis projects ($10,000 total).

Proposals are to be submitted directly to ORSD. They are not to go through SPA.

Proposals will be reviewed by a committee of senior faculty with broad representation across the school’s three disciplinary clusters (life sciences, quantitative sciences, social/policy sciences).

Proposals should be submitted as one PDF document and should include the following:

  • CIF Application Face Page
  • Research Proposal: Maximum of 5 pages of text. Figures and references are allowable in addition to this page limit.  No other appendix material will be accepted.
  • NIH Biosketch: Current NIH Biosketch (new format) for each participating investigator, including all active and completed funding sources.
  • Budget Request: Budget estimates should be submitted on NIH PHS 398 budget forms with major divisions of funds (personnel, equipment, etc.). PIs may include effort and salary support commensurate with their effort. The full amount of the award may be used for direct costs.
  • Budget Justification

The anticipated award period will begin in February 2016.

A final report is due at the end of the one-year funding period. Should the PI leave the Harvard Chan School, the remainder of the award will be forfeited (i.e., may not be transferred to another institution).
